We have learned that we can vaccinate chickens with gluten, so that the yolks of their eggs contain an antibody against gluten, called AGY. The eggs are collected and the yolks are dried and put into capsules. A type of sugar, mannitol, is also added to the capsule to help protect the AGY from acid in the stomach and intestine. We are testing AGY to see how well it can bind with gluten an individual may be accidentally eating. We hope that by binding to gluten, the gluten will be blocked from reaching the walls of the intestine and causing damage and symptoms. If people with CD are able to take AGY capsules and safely eat a diet where some foods may be contaminated with gluten, their quality of life would be improved.

This product is currently investigational, meaning that Health Canada has not approved its use, outside of a study. It has been approved for use in this study. We aim to enroll 149 people into the study.
